Bottom Line Up Front: Spend the day at the cavern, pool, playground, and beautiful park grounds. Spend the night somewhere else.
Rickwood Caverns State Park is a wonderful and affordable family day trip. The cavern is a stunning natural treasure. The guided tour is friendly fun and informative. It’s a moderate physical challenge with almost 400 steps in total. It is not wheelchair accessible, but a virtual tour is available for the mobility impaired. Make sure to mention if you are camping as there is a ticket discount. The gift shop is very nice and full of great souvenirs, a snack bar, and a large playground out front. And WOW the pool! Huge and clean and nice all the way around. Fed by fresh clean water from deep within the cavern, it’s always cool and comfortable. The surrounding landscape is lush and beautiful. Amongst the trees, rocks and walking trails are plenty of picnic spots with tables and grills. There are several pavilions for larger events with lots of room and plenty of parking.
The campground is lacking. With less than 15 (electric and water only) camp sites, it feels as if camping was an afterthought as opposed to a feature. The sites are cramped and not well laid out. Most of the sites are sliced out of what seems like a large gravel parking lot. There is very little room between sites. Some are very small with little room for more than a small pop-up, and some are larger, but often with the power/water post on the wrong side and 20-30 feet away from the site. The gift shop (which fully supports the cavern and pool) doesn’t even offer the most basic camping supplies and seemed only moderately interested in camping business. The primitive camping area, although not as remote as it could be, is nice if you want to pop a tent.

Lovely State Park. We had a 45 minute tour down to a 62F warm world under the earth. Caves carved by an ancient sea. Stalagmites and stalactites, shining minerals, a lake, clear water.. unbelievably beautiful, and lots of steps to get back up to the sunlight. A fun trip!

Absolutely amazing cavern tour! The Cavern tour can be purchased within the campground, in the main office. It's $20 a person. Infants get in free. The tour lasts around an hour. The tour consists of a good bit of steps and can drop to 62 degrees inside. Make sure to wear closed toe shoes as some parts of the tour can get muddy/wet. So glad we made the trip from Birmingham and took this tour!! Pictures don't do it justice!

I went there only for the caverns tour. I recommend buying tickets online if only coming for the tour because the tickets were sold out when I arrived to the ticket counter. It is not accessible as there are plenty of stairs to climb.
The tour guide was very enthusiastic and informative, and the caverns are spectacular! They are so majestic and awe-inspiring!
Bathrooms were decent.

A fun park and cave tour. We came for the hiking trails and cave tour but discovered that the locals enjoy their Olympic size, spring fed(cold water from the cave pools) swimming pool! The hour long cave tour was fun and terrifying at the same time. Steep stairs and narrow passages with 30 other people can be challenging with excited children. But the tour guides were well trained and friendly.
Park also had a gift shop with a limited amount of park souvenirs and snacks, ice cream and drinks.

This is a wonderful place to go during the heat of the summer day. The caverns are a nice cool temperature of 62 degrees or so.
The entry is a bit, but it is a guided tour. The tour is long, and their are steep stairs at some spots going down and up. Probably not recommended for the folks that have a hard time walking on uneven surfaces.
The cave tour is pretty long and has many really great formations. One of my favorite parts was the fossilized coral ceiling, exquisite!
Was not disappointed here.

Great place to take friends & family for the cave, camping, hiking, or swimming. Lots of rocks, boulders & equipment for kids to climb, and a fairly small campground with RV & tent sites.

Watch for snakes!

The cave itself isn't very large but still has lots of great formations & tunnels; although the wait for a tour is sometimes longer than the tour itself, and the number + steepness of stairs inside might be difficult for very small children, or those with injuries or disabilities.

However, the park has plenty of picnic & play areas while waiting for tours to start/finish, and the pool is very nice; fed with water from the cave!

Lovely park, great for camping?. I have enjoyed primative camping at this site twice. There are tours of the caverns, firewood for sale, and wonderful green space.
