THE SERVICE:

Upon entering the restaurant I was greeted with genuine smiles and kindness; a true southern hospitality experience. As I waited for my order I observed the gentleman in the kitchen pause each time a guest entered to offer a greeting. The younger gentleman working the register and packing orders was well mannered, and displayed good customer service.

The atmosphere was inviting, and the small dining area was clean and organized. I ordered my meal online, but had an additional wait (Approximately 10 minutes) past the pickup time.

THE FOOD:

I ordered the “Soul Bowl” selecting the fried pork chop, candied yams, baked macaroni & cheese, and a separate side order of collard greens.

The thick center cut pork chop was seasoned nicely and fried to perfection- the standout bite. The “candied yams” had the consistency of loose mashed potatoes; the flavor profile was akin to a sweet potato pie filling vs the traditional southern dish.

Traditionally, the yams would be cut into slices or chunks topped with butter, sugar and spices. During the baking process the yams release liquid creating a thick syrup because it mixes with the sugar resulting in the candied effect. This was an interesting interpretation, and not my palate pal due to the consistency.

The baked macaroni and cheese was a beautiful disaster. Although the dish looked appetizing, it was very dry and flavorless. The collard greens were cooked to the perfect consistency, and made with love. However, the dish wasn’t my palate pal because I could taste the added sugar rendering the dish too sweet for my savory preference.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

I appreciate traditional (without a cheese roux) backed macaroni and cheese because it pays homage to the southern classic. However, the downside in commercial cooking large batches- the dish will dry out if kept in a warmer over an extended period of time. Especially if the dish is lacking enough cheese, butter and milk; in addition to not being properly sealed to lock in moisture. From what I tasted, the dish needed more of everything, especially salt and pepper.

This restaurant is marketed as traditional southern cuisine. As such, the candied yams were a huge letdown. I think renaming the dish sweet potato casserole is more appropriate.

There was too much liquid in the side collard greens resulting in spillage during transport. The portion of collard greens is too small for the container used- adding more liquid made it look fuller, but created a mess.

There is a discrepancy with your soul bowl (pork chop) description on the menu vs online ordering, and the printed receipt. The menu states pork chop (meaning 1), but when ordering it changes to “pork chops”, indicating more than one. This can cause confusion and lead to potential customer dissatisfaction. My serving was very meaty and satisfying, but I’m unsure if I was supposed to have 1 or 2 pork chops.

I suggest rethinking the packaging and or plating of this specific soul bowl if only serving 1 pork chop, because the meal looks skimpy. Maybe add a piece of cornbread to fill the space.

THE VALUE:

I think the price point aligns with current industry standards, but the portion sizes are below average, but satiating. The inviting atmosphere and amazing hospitality created a returning customer to further explore the menu.

Will not be going back. We were excited about trying a new soul food restaurant. Drove a hour to get there. Disappointed would be an understatement. Macaroni and cheese was dry, and oily how can it be both I don’t know, no seasoning in sight. You can’t even pull the noodles apart with a fork. Stick your fork in it and take a bite out of the brick, and let’s just say not worth eating. The catfish was very fishy tasting. I mean I know it’s fish but it’s like I caught in the water by my teeth and it has batter on it. The fried okra was hard and tastes like canned okra. The sweet potatoes were ok, but more like sweet potato soup. I’m very disappointed. I’m happy I tried it so I know not to go back.

A Soulful Sunday at Nytia's Soul Kitchen

After our Sunday workout session, my wife and I decided to treat ourselves to some comfort food at Nytia's Soul Kitchen in downtown Taunton. What a perfect decision that turned out to be!

Located at 73 Main Street, this charming establishment truly delivers on its promise of "A Taste of the South." The cozy atmosphere immediately drew us in, and owner Tia's warm Southern hospitality made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived.

I couldn't resist ordering the chicken and waffles - a true soul food classic. The chicken was seasoned to perfection with a crispy exterior giving way to juicy, flavorful meat inside. Paired with fluffy waffles, it hit all the right notes. The mac and cheese side was rich, creamy, and everything you'd want in this classic comfort dish.

My wife Casandra opted for the Cajun pasta, which she absolutely loved. The perfect amount of spice complemented the creamy sauce and perfectly cooked pasta.

If you're looking for authentic Southern cuisine in Taunton, Nytia's Soul Kitchen is a hidden gem worth discovering. The combination of delicious food, welcoming atmosphere, and genuine hospitality makes it a standout dining experience. Soul food is good for both the soul and the taste buds, and Nytia's delivers on both counts!

I bought take out today for the first time from this restaurant. I ordered a soul bowl with pork chops, red beans and rice, and mac and cheese. Everything was so good, I can't even decide what I liked best- but maybe the mac and cheese. And the pork chop was so moist. I couldn't even believe it when I bit into it.

Such a pleasant experience! Greeted as soon as we walked in. The atmosphere was calming and relaxing. The owner is absolutely amazing and the food was just so comforting and delicious. Chicken and Waffles were 10/10. Definitely coming back here again. Decently priced for the quality and quantity. So worth it.

Tried Nytia's with my wife for the first time this evening, we were pleasantly greeted right away by a nice young lady who lit up the place with her smile, we were seated and placed our order, Nytia immediately came to our table and with a big smile, introduced herself and advised us that one of her fryers was down so it may be a bit longer than the usual serving wait, however, our food was served good and hot within reasonable time! My wife and I were extremely pleased with the welcoming venue, service, staff, and delicious food! We are definitely adding Nytia's Soul Kitchen to our "where are we going out to eat" list!!!

I just had to write a review for Nytia’s Soul Kitchen. I ordered the catfish dinner with collard greens and candied yams. Everything about the food is the real deal. It was delicious! I’ve been looking for a restaurant that served authentic soul food around the Taunton area for years and I’m delighted that I have found it at Nytia’s! I will be back to try the other items from the menu! Kudos to Nytia and her staff. Welcome to the neighborhood. If you like soul food or want to experience it, you will get a taste of it at Nytia’s place along with the charming southern hospitality.

Top Tier Soul Food. The Sassy wings and fried okra are amazing. I took a 40 minute drive and food was still steaming hot when I got home. Service was impeccable and the owner Ty was lovely, welcoming, and engaging.
