Ideal place to launch your windsurf, kitesurf, foil etc. There’s even the sign that says. “Sailboard access” which must’ve been custom-made buy some really awesome people! There’s even a free outdoor shower and restrooms. There’s a wide open grassy field to set up your rig And picnic and throw a frisbee with your kids. The access to the water is just a little bit, but overall very convenient. This will be my new go to spot to launch when the wind is right. (and the wind is very often right here!)

At this cozy afternoon after July 4th, with the wonderful weather, I figured it’s the perfect time to jot down a few thoughts about Ned Point Lighthouse. Nestled on Ned’s Point Road in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, this lighthouse has such a cool history. Built in 1838 for about $5,000, it’s named after a local farmer, Ned Dexter. Leonard Hammond, a local builder, supervised its construction. They used local stone from nearby beaches and crafted a birdcage-style lantern, just like the one at Bird Island Light in Marion.

The lighthouse stands 39 feet tall, with 32 granite steps inside, cantilevered to the outside wall without mortar. Originally, it had 11 whale oil lamps with parabolic reflectors, but these were swapped out for a fifth-order Fresnel lens in 1857, and the lantern shape changed to octagonal.

The Great Blizzard of 1888 wreaked havoc on the keeper’s stone house, which was then replaced with a wooden one. Fast forward to 1923, and the lighthouse was automated. The stone keeper’s house was moved to Wing’s Neck Light in Bourne. After being deactivated in 1952, the lighthouse was modernized and reactivated in 1961, now featuring a 6-second isophase white light.

This place got listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, and it’s still standing strong. The white tower with its black lantern is just so classic.

Our first time to Mattapoisett and we were so happy to discover Ned's Point! Beautiful little park with benches and picnic tables. The beach was quiet since it was freezing temps but the sun was shining so it was not bad. There is a bathroom building that is open during the season. I could have sat there on a bench and looked out at the water all day!

Quiet beautiful place to spend a summer day. If you have a boat then it will be definitely more charming. Fishing is allowed and tons of seabass, perch are available. Just stand in knee deep water, school of shoals will be around and tickle the feet. Such a lovely feeling. Lighthouse is small one but very pretty. Day ends with a perfect sunset. Lovely neighborhood and the people around also very nice. Love the town and would love to visit again. A day worth spending in Neds Point Lighthouse.
