It was really just okay. I have been to many military base museums. They are great as they are free and many times have things that children would really enjoy. For being the only basic training naval base I would have expected more. The foundation of the displays were explanatory posters with a few photos. There were some uniforms, a rack layout and a few other items, but not a lot.
The strangest part of the museum experience is that about 1/3 of the space is dedicated to a display on tattoos. The museum may be worth stopping in at if you are in the area but I would not make a special trip.

I really enjoyed the opportunity to learn so much. The wide range of subjects and information provided wonderful entertainment while we waited for our new Sailor. If you like history this is the place for you. A piece of old ironsides mad3 my day and the whole visit worthwhile.

Not as much to physically look at as I hoped there would be. Still a good time for those who like history. They give kids a scavenger hunt to fill out history questions and they get a blue dog tag necklace as a reward. It's all free so it's worth a trip with a curious child. There's a big turret outside the museum time look at (can't touch). The plane from other people photos is no longer there.

As a mom of a Sailor, this museum was very helpful and enlightening to what goes on in boot camp and a sailor's life. I visited here after my son graduated from boot camp. It would have been nice to know some of this while he was going through his training. He was so limited as to what he could tell me. There were many sleepless nights that I laid awake praying for my boy.
Looking at the timeline, I could slightly understand some of his struggles. I feel that it was a very slight glimpse into his world. Despite all that he went through, he came through it with a love for the Navy. And as a Mother I feel that I am looking through a cloudy window hoping to get a glimpse of my boy now and then. He left as a boy but I know that he will grow into a man. It is not easy relinquishing my boy. My prayer is that he will grow into a strong, loyal man who will not lose his faith but rather grow and encourage others.
I definitely recommend the museum and wish that others could see it before their loved one enters the service. It helps you to understand and appreciate the Navy better.

It was a good setup but could use allot more to expand. Receptionist were exceptional. LOL the tattoo display was the largest area. It was good though.

Well, it's free! That was the best part.
Otherwise, the museum is very small and has 3 sections to walk through. One is about tattoos, one is boot camp and the last was life on a ship which was the coolest part in my opinion.

Had fun visiting this place. We're a navy family though, so our opinion may be a bit biased. They can definitely expand this museum for more exhibits and guides but it is a good little museum just off base at great lakes. Very cool for what it was.
