The Museum of Colorado Prisons in Cañon City is a unique and captivating experience. Set in a former women’s prison, it offers a chilling and authentic glimpse into the history of incarceration in Colorado. Walking through the old cells and seeing the artifacts gives you an eerie sense of what life was like behind bars.

One of the most striking exhibits is the preserved gas chamber, complete with detailed information about its history and use. It’s both sobering and thought provoking, making you reflect on the justice system’s evolution.

The museum staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and the self guided tour is easy to follow at your own pace. Whether you’re interested in history, criminology, or just looking for something different, this museum is an absolute must see. Plan for 1 1/2 hours to take it all in!

This was a super cool museum. A bit macabre, but I'm into that! It was even better because the inmates are literally right on the other side of the ginormous wall. The artifacts are great and TONS of info and stories. The 4 stars is only cause I couldn't bring my water in and the faucet is taped off. I had to leave half way through to get a drink, but was able to come back. You should have an area were people can leave their beverages to get a drink if needed. They sell items made by inmates in the store, I feel a way about it... But not sure about the way I feel ?
All in all, this is well worth a visit! Oh it is self guided which I enjoy.

Such a great experience! When in town, it’s something to do. It’s maintained very well and has a bunch of cool artifacts. The vibes inside were definitely a little sad, but it’s such a cool piece of history!

Highly recommend the weekend guided tours as opposed to just self-exploration. Really enjoyed our afternoon here & would advise others to see it! Vinny did a great job as tour guide. We especially loved the inmate artwork for sale! PS: don’t go in the wrong entrance! 😉

We enjoyed a stop here after the Royal Gorge Railroad. The museum costs $12 per person. They give you a small booklet to use in conjunction with each “cell” for more information. The museum is laid out well and very informative. I would say you should plan for at least an hour, maybe two depending on the ages in your group and how much history you want to read about regarding Colorado prisons. Very friendly staff.

Fun museum! Quaint, self led tour with a guide provided to you at check in. Tickets were pretty cheap and we used a great Groupon for them. Some of the information was understandably more graphic than others so with young kids I would recommend peeking in the rooms before you let them in to make sure they're not going to read something you don't want them to. Lots of posted printed information was present as well as lots of visuals and actual items or replicas of items relating to Colorado prisons. Real cute gift shop at the end with lots of neat things to buy. We were there over an hour and could have easily stayed longer if we didn't have other plans that day. I would recommend planning 1 to 2 hours to be there.

This place is history, and has so much to look at. Great place to see an inside look at prisons and how they once we're. Gift shop is fun and reasonable. Worth the stop in Canon City. Architecture is eye worthy. Stop here.

Had a fun day bringing a friend to see this museum. She had no idea of what prison was like. The staff were very friendly and the museum was a joy to go through because there was no crowd or someone telling you what was going on they gave you a little booklet to help you go through the museum at your own pace, which is good. souvenirs and T-shirts available along with prison socks and aprons and sweatshirts all with traditional black-and-white stripes, (see photos).
