(From the perspective of mid fall, and late winter)

Beautiful woods, but somewhat confusing access points. Not sure if we're on public grounds, or or on service roads. Maybe one and the same. You could approach shelter one by Dunbar Brook Trail Head, but you'll have to ford the small river (Dunbar Brook) as a bridge we've heard has been washed away. Mind you we're usually here when there's snow on the ground or it's super cold and freezing. Otherwise you would have to go around and walk the approximate 2 miles through the woods to get to shelter number one

We've been doing backpacking overnight in November and March for the last 3 years for a total of 4 trips. Been to shelter number one and shelter number two, but still cannot locate shelter number three. Ideas are that Hurricane Irene destroyed it.

2 years ago shelter number one had lots of leftover provisions provided by prior campers.

Shelter number two, isn't stocked, but I believe it's a more picturesque spot. Shelter number 2 can also be accessed by the Dunbar Brook Trailhead, but there is a moderate challenge of going up the hill to get to shelter number 2. An easier and less challenging route to shelter number two is to access it from the Raycroft Extension Road. Which is pretty much a slightly downhill hike for about 45 minutes. we found a little alcove that seems like it was made for parking, and we parked our car there and walk the few feet to access the path that takes you to shelter number 2.

This is not too far from the Roycroft Lookout, and an access point to Spruce Mountain maybe what a quarter mile away.

The last thing we need to do is to the 10-mile loop, and confirm if the shelter number three is destroyed or not.

We have no idea how it is in the regular spring and summer months, but it's really a magical place in the off season. During the offseason, especially when it's snowing, be wary that a lot of roads are not plowed, and lot of access points are closed.

Had a good time hiking to the top of Spruce Mountain late in the season. Scenic and quiet.
