Such a beautiful bridge! I could feel the history in every beam and every bolt and I found myself walking it many times and taking in the views of the bridge as well as the surroundings. I will say parking area and how to get to it is has a lot to be desired as far as being marked in a very visible fashion & think that may help attract more visitors as well. I wound up parking across the street and I didn't mind the walk in the park but crossing what is obviously a main road on an extremely busy day can be very difficult. Get ready to run across the street as soon as you don't see or hear a vehicle and that can be difficult as the road bends & turns & it's difficult to see oncoming traffic. But once you're able to make it to the other side you will soon discover it's well worth it. There's a feeling you get at such a great place that is hard to describe & really needs to be felt in order to understand. The cowered bridge acts as a sort of doorway to the Veterans park & old time military vehicle which is very well preserved and surrounded by beautiful flowers. There is a memorial to all branches of the military and also a memorial to lives lost locally & also by national tragedy. It's a peaceful area decorated with colorful flowers, flags of tge different military branches as well as POW's, well kept lawns , benches & plaques which explain the dedication. There's a,stream that runs under the bridge which I did see a few people in kayaks & small fishing boats. It is definitely a place to go and be humbled.

A neat part of history. I went there once when I was younger. Glad to see it’s still being maintained for the future generations to enjoy.

I added pictures from when a semi went through and damaged it. They are still working on it.

Very peaceful! Never any crowds. Nice and quiet with ony the sound of rushing water from the bureau creek. I have been go to this place from time to time since I was a kid. I would bring a fishing pole along and fish the banks for catfish and smallmouth bass. Still looks the same as I remembered. The red covered bridge is truely a historic site. I really hope someday that the state would put in some trails for hiking and better access to the creek.

This is an impressive bridge. The damage is so sad.

Now it looks like the roof has been raised and some temporary(?) internal roof supports have been installed.

The Red Covered Bridge just south of Princeton Illinois was originally built in 1863. It is one of the last wooden, covered bridges in Illinois and is still open to traffic. Driving through the Red Covered Bridge that takes you over the Big Bureau Creek is a unique experience.

As bridges go, this is pretty neat. We had stopped at the services nearby for some food and I figured as this was only a mile or so away, it'd be rude not to stop by, glad I did, nice little bit of history hidden away.
