You aren't exactly spoiled for choice on hotels while staying in Unalaska, so I wanted to do a wrote up of my experience staying here. |Pros: Location is much better if you are on foot, having most things closer made it feasible to walk into town and back a couple times every day. It's more convenient to most of the suggested hikes and having a bar out back is a win if you want to mingle with the locals and Unisea employees.|Cons: You will have to endure fishy smells every time you head out. I have a pretty sensitive nose and didn't notice the smell in the hotel, but you will walk past the cannery on your way everywhere. Noise is also a concern, not so bad if you are on an end room, but if a group is smoking and joking near your window you will smell and hear it.|I found the bed to be comfortable and the room to be cozy and warm. If you are driving it is probably worth the (at the time of my stay) $25/day upcharge to stay in the Grand Aleutian, but if you are planning to walk everywhere you will be greatful for the trimmed travel time of the Harbor View.

My stay was great, the room not good, I need to ask housekeeping new towel everyday, cleanliness? But I have a good view of harbor and I saw Eagles ? morning and evening across my window. Thank you Lord despite of everything wrong in the room we still have a good time. People are so nice, harbor grill bar and their bartenders are friendly, sushi ? bar are excellent, the liquor store employee Bethlehem very nice, friendly and fantastic we love her. We love our stay but everything good ends. Just some recommendations to hotel owners to keep good maintainance please keep that place properly manage.

My husband and I stayed at the Unisea Inn while on a vacation trip to Dutch Harbor and Unalaska. We are budget travelers and don't mind staying in basic accommodations.(Part of our time there we were camping.) We spent three nights at the Unisea, each night in a different room. On the positive side: All of the beds were clean and comfortable. The bathrooms seemed clean enough although one of the three smelled like mildew. The showers worked fine and there was lots of hot water. On the negative side: you can't regulate the temperature in the rooms, they were very hot, which forced us to keep the windows open. If you plan to stay here be sure to bring ear plugs because the street noise and generators in the nearby fish processing plants are very loud! The carpets in all the rooms were old and looked really dirty, with many stains and cigarette burns. There are no staff in the "Inn" so you have to pick up and drop off the room key at the Grand Aleutian Hotel which is about a half mile away. If you decide to stay here try to get a room overlooking the small boat harbor, the view is good and its quieter.|

Since there is absolutely no other option for budget travelers, any review is more or less pointless, but at least you'll know what to expect. If the place looks like a cannery dormitory, that's because it was designed for exactly that purpose; in fact, many Unisea employees live here. The rooms are on the top floor, with Dutch Harbor's infamous Unisea bar underneath. Ask for a room at either end of the building, away from the noise of the bar. There are many smoking rooms, and the smell of cigarette smoke pervades the whole place. You are literally surrounded by loud, stinky fish processing facilities, but one side does offer views of the small boat harbor. The room I stayed in had 2 broken chairs, a TV from the '80s, a bed, and little else. The mattress was comfortable and the room was clean, there were clean towels and the housekeeping staff were helpful. The laundry is a relative steal at $10/load, located at one end of the building, you drop your stuff off in the A.M. and the attendants wash and fold your clothes, and return them by afternoon. The WI-FI offered is typically expensive and slow. Hint: unplug the LAN cable from the IP telephone to surf for free. You won't feel guilty about it after dropping 99+ bucks to stay here.

Unbeknown to me, I arrived in Dutch Harbor two knights before the official King Crabbing got underway, and long story short I was lucky enough to get a room that night. The only available room was at the UniSea. I wanted to stay at the grand Aleutian but they didn’t have any rooms left, I was 12 on their list. They shuttled me to the UniSea. It isn’t a place I would stay at by choice but I do have to admit the towels were clean as well as the room. And it was a smoking room. The place is rough…meaning I wouldn’t stay there with my wife and 9 month child but I didn’t mind being there too much on my own. The bar in the back of the lobby is best compared to a seedy down town bar close to the docks (again a place I wouldn’t go with my wife and 9 month child) It’s a place where a bunch of drunken sailors go to drink. If you want a nicer, classier place go the lounge at the Aleutian. I have to admit though, after reading the other reviews for this hotel I was quite sure this place was going to be the a rat hole. Expecting the worse, it wasn’t all that bad. The next 3 nights where stayed at the Aleutian.|

We arrived at Dutch Harbor by AK ferry. Stayed 2 nights in June 2010 and was satisfied that since the only alternative (camping is also possible but very windy and primative - see WWII films) was the Grand Aleutian, we had a better deal at Unisea ($125 vs $200/night). Guest rooms are in same building as bar (mild scene compared to some I've visited) but in a different part of building; could not hear any excessive noise - alway have earplugs when traveling. Was told by staff at Grand A (where you get the key) that carpets have been replaced and that remodeling is slowly underway.

I stayed at the Harbor View Inn recently in a room opposite of the UniSea processing plant where it's quieter. The accommodations were adequate when you consider that you're in the middle of the Aleutian chain. The Harbor View Grill was the highlight of my stay....great sushi and beer battered halibut fish n chips!

Just returned from Dutch Harbor on business and thought I'd warn any future travelers about the UniSea Inn. The room was filthy and noisy. The food at the Sports Bar was not very good and a drunk fisherman tried to pick a fight while I was eating there. Overall, a very disappointing experience. Try a hotel on the Unalaska side if you're planning a trip.Clarence NewmanNOAA observer
