If you're looking to do some stargazing, this is only a 2hr drive from Chicago and if timed right with the moon phase you'll see skies like this. There is a little light pollution but you will see the Milky Way Core.

Great for some quiet, low key camping. Nice flat/graded site with bonfire rings, grill grates, and picnic tables for each tent spot. A water spigot (not sure if potable) and outhouse is right near the camping site. Bring plenty of bug spray and sunscreen! There was a big brush pile for campfire kindling; you can get firewood at the Tractor Supply Company about 20 minutes down the road.

My friend and I went there for the first time to hunt Doves. Since we went late in the season we didn't expect to shoot much, and we didn't, but instead we enjoyed some time in the nature that was almost better that bagging daily limit. Place is pretty easy to find (don't rely on GPS since it will take you to the prohibited area). It's not close to Chicago, but that works to its advantage - when we went there was almost nobody else around (lot was completely empty). As to the habit, it is much better than what I have seen at other places around Kankakee or DES Plains public lands. Easy to follow trails and easy to notice food plots. We'll be definitely back for Dove hunt next season.

Took the trip to Green River from Chicago area for astrophotography. Please keep the area dark, sadly there aren't many other dark sites left anywhere around here.

The camp grounds are clean and maintained. Very quiet and peaceful too.

Go and visit. What an amazing place. Make sure you read the regulations first as this is primarily a hunting location. Parking spots along Pump Factory road are easy to get in and out of. Wherever you are, respect the nature there and others who are out enjoying it too.

This is the nicest dark site for stargazing near Chicago. Not expensive at all, $8per vehicle per night. There are some hunters camping as well who sometimes uses white lights. Otherwise this place is a really good spot for looking at the stars. Have few firepits and grills. 2 decent restroom (non flush type). Some picnic tables, nice place for overnight camping.
