The Donner Camp Historic Trail is a nice short 0.3 mile loop trail to hike located just North of Truckee. It is easily accessible and offers a ton of history regarding of the location and historic Donner party which settled here due to a severe snow storm. Overall a nice and short trail to walk.

Easy walk through tragic history in scenic surroundings. Some of the informative signs are faded so consider downloading the Wikipedia page before you go. Driving here from the nearby Donner museum we got a sense of just how far that five miles between Donner Party campsites really was...in the middle of a harsh mountain winter...on foot.

Feb. 17 2021. Unplowed car park but room for 6 or so cars at main road turnoff. Easy walk into the area. Snowy trails. People cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. We managed the short Donner interpretative trail in normal boots. Beautiful.

You walk on a trail through a picturesque pine forest, and periodically encountered signs explaining the history of the Donner family. One sign marks the approximate location of their winter camp, where half of them died of cold and starvation.

A Historic Trail with interpretation panels at the site of the Donner Party Tragedy at Alder Creek where George and Jacob Donner and families where separated from the rest of the part and trapped in an early winter snowstorm.

Simple easy walk to get the experience of where part of Donner party spent the winter. Other hikes start from here too. Good parking.

Even though I was a northern Californian native, the Donner story was never completely clear to me. I rented a house on Donner Lake with several San Franciscan's years ago to ski various resorts and yet I never stopped back then to visit this historical site. We learned so much, including the several campsites, one of which was located at Alder Creek, miles away.

There is a short hike 1/3 mile which is beautiful and haunting. It is possible to take a longer hike. Also picnic tables.
