This is the battle that was made possible by the Union victory at Honey Springs in the Creek Nation of Indian Territory a few days earlier. It allowed the Union to retake Fort Smith, secure the upper Arkansas River and close off the Confederate-allied Five Tribes in the I.T. The taking of the River soon led to the capture of Little Rock and, with the recent fall of Vicksburg, prevented any serious threat to Union control of the Mississippi River from its west bank in Arkansas. The Confederate retreat made the entire area south of the Fort subject to devastating bushwhacker attacks and refugee suffering until the end of the War. Yet there is just a small historical marker with not enough information and context. Probably because the Union won and, hey, it's in Arkansas.
