Visiting Arlington House in Birmingham was a complex experience—both fascinating and heavy with history. The house itself is a well-preserved example of Southern antebellum architecture, and the grounds are beautifully maintained. However, as a Black visitor, I couldn't help but feel the weight of its past.

Arlington was once a plantation, and while the site does a good job of highlighting the historical significance of the home, I would have liked to see a deeper acknowledgment of the enslaved people who lived and labored there. Their stories are just as important as those of the wealthy white families who occupied the house.

That said, walking through the rooms and seeing the period furniture, artifacts, and historical documents gave me a strong sense of Birmingham’s history. It was a reminder of how far we’ve come and how much further we have to go in telling a more complete version of the past.

If you visit, I recommend taking the time to reflect on the untold stories that spaces like this hold. Arlington House is worth seeing, but I hope to see a more inclusive approach to its history in the future.

Beautiful property. This is absolutely a must stop. Grounds are kept up really nice the staff was great. Clean restrooms. And the entrance fee is inexpensive compared to other homes. Parking is plentiful.

We had a wonderful time today enjoying the beautiful grounds, complete with a vegetable garden! The trees and flowers were Beautiful!! The house was just amazing! The tour had a video to watch and a gift shop before we took the tour. It was a 5 out of Five star!! Lastly, the staff was top notch and so friendly and interactive!! We loved it and would go again and take friends for a fun day exploring our history!

I had such a fantastic time exploring Arlington Antebellum Home and Garden! It’s definitely not the largest or most extravagant estate I’ve been to, but it’s worth seeing if you’re planning a trip to Birmingham or live there.

All the staff I interacted with were phenomenal, and I had such a great time talking to a volunteer gardener when I visited.

Overall, nine out of ten because the location is really bad. It’s in a run down neighborhood, and I didn’t feel super safe once I left the gates.

Note:

-You’ll spend about an hour here including the 20 minute video.
-Tickets are $5 for an adult and $3 for students.
-If you collect postcards they have some for sale that aren’t on display.

Nice antebellum home to visit. You can watch an introduction video in the ticket office, walk the grounds and tour the home. It's all self-guided. For the 5 dollars per person it's well worth it.

Ironically, we showed up on a day they were closed for an offsite event. However, one of the caretakers opened up everything and allowed us to take a self guided tour. We really enjoyed the experience, and we had the entire place to ourselves. I am very grateful to the gentlemen for opening everything and giving us insightful information about the site.

Tour of house and meal, beverage, salad, entree and dessert, were included.
Ms. Toby was very concise in her presentation. She is, also, very professional and accommodating. Lovely lady.
Our group of 20 enjoyed ourselves and some will be returning for other events hosted at Arlington Antebellum House.
