I have been to the Apache-Sitgreaves Observatory many times and each time it's offered the most rewarding opportunities in visual observing of the night sky. Being an amateur astronomer from Michigan it's rare to view through a telescope with such steady clear skies. We certainly have dark skies in many areas of Michigan but not with the steady transparent skies afforded by the dry desert air of Arizona. Steven has always been a gracious host but his knowledge and enthusiasm of the night sky and especially of visual observing brings a special level of excitement. I'm always looking forward to my next visit.

I also agree that it's smart to dress in layers of warm clothes. It's easy enough to remove them based on your own level of comfort.

This was an awesome experience not to be missed if you are in the area. Steven, our host, was very knowledgeable and was willing to share and answer any questions you had about our night skies. We saw Jupiter and it’s moons, Saturn and it’s rings, Antares and nebula. He pointed out the Milky Way cloud. Among many other amazing things. He also pointed out when the international space station flew over. Good for the novice and good the experienced star gazer. Thank you

I have had the privilege of visiting Apache-Sitgreaves Observatory many times over the years. Each time I am spellbound by the majestic skies. The beauty of our universe is truly displayed overhead. Take warm clothes for observing at that altitude. Be prepared to observe the Milky Way "cloud" emerging from the horizon. The skies are truly amazing and the 36" telescope is a marvel to experience.. If you go, and I encourage you to, prepare yourself for an enjoyable time.

Went for a night-time observing and had a great time. Steven (host / tour guide) was knowledgeable and friendly. The different telescopes provided different aspects to each of the objects viewed. Had to use a ladder to get to the big scope when it was turned up, but that was fairly easy. We were lucky enough to have a very clear night and besides the stars/galaxies/nebula/ planets through the scope, we saw about 12 shooting stars.

Warning: It does get much colder than you'd expect. Dress warm or have extra clothes to layer up with.

I wish we could have found the observatory. Google map took us down Lodgepole Rd to Sunrise Ln. Which is clearly marked private. STOP and turn back. It also took us to Homestead and Jeep Trail which is also marked private so we gave up.

You are never going to find anyone more knowledgeable about our galaxy! I don't think there is anything he doesn't know about stars! I was very impressed that the owner cares enough to watch the weather and re schedule if he needs to you so you can have the best experience. What a great place in Heber/Overgaard.
