Absolutely loved our trips on the Single Star, so much so that we went twice the summer of 2023. July was rainy, cold and rough, but it’s Alaska and you deal with what you get and make the most of it. September was amazing with clear warm-ish days and cool nights. The crew was outstanding and we were well cared for at all times. Olivia kept us safe on bear territory while Julia fed us the best meals. Mike is an amazing Captain who kept us safe and found whales for us to photograph. We saw so many bears in different areas, it was fantastic. Dress for the Alaska wilderness and bring a sense of adventure and this trip will be a highlight for many years to come.

We booked a Kodiak Bear watching tour with Adventure Kodiak in 2022 and had such a great time, we booked another tour for 2023. It was just as amazing as the first time. We saw the bears chasing salmon up streams, mamas with first and second year cubs, plus so much more. Captain Mike is an exceptional captain. He knows all the best locations to find bears and always mindful of the weather and currents. Our chef, Julia, prepared gourmet meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We never went hungry. Our guide, Olivia, is a true outdoorsman. Always mindful of the activities of the bears, keeping us at safe distances, but making sure we got the photo. 6 Star trip.

The "Single Star" is a five+ star boat. Captain Mike made sure we were able to see countless bears, whales, the most adorable sea otters, and salmon.
The chef was OMG fabulous. No one went hungry, and the dessert was so yummy.
Our guide had us walking with the bears with all due respect to the bears. I showed my pictures to friends and family, and they couldn't believe I got all these amazing pictures with my cellphone.
All done and said it was without a doubt a vacation of a lifetime.
PS: I want to go back.

Our trip on the Single Star with Captain Mike was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. The accommodations were very comfortable and clean. Olivia was a wonderful guide. Her guidance allowed us to be close and observe the bears while still staying safe. Julia's cooking was amazing- how she was able to produce the meals that she did from the galley kitchen, I will never know. We had some rough water crossing the straight to Geographic Harbor but Mike's experience and knowledge helped us arrive safely. While we had some rainy days, we were fortunate to have good weather overall as the group the week before us had to come back a day early. They were lucky that Captain Mike was weather aware as they would not have been able to cross the strait if they had not left early. We were able to watch bears for several hours for 4 days, saw puffins, otters, whales, bald eagles and beautiful scenery. If you can get a reservation I would highly recommend a trip on the Single Star with Captain Mike. It is an experience you will never forget!

It was the trip of a lifetime. Mike and his crew took wonderful care of us and we saw wildlife constantly throughout the trip including on the voyage out to Katmai and coming back. At Katmai we were seldom out of sight of the bears and we saw many each time we went to shore or out on the skiff. We had wonderful meals in between bear watching and the guide was very perceptive of our abilities and flexible so we could fully enjoy our excursions. Some of the best times sitting round after dinner sharing stories with Mike and his many years of experience.

What an overall exhilarating experience! We enjoyed our time on the Single Star with Mike, Julia, and Olivia as our crew. Mike is a wealth of knowledge about the area and the bears. Olivia is a skilled guide who kept us safe and comfortable around the bears. Julia is a wonderful chef who spoiled all aboard with her fabulous meals. The boat is comfortable and offers adequate room to move about. Mike put us ashore with the skiff and we typically spent 3-4 hours at a time viewing and photographing bears of all ages feasting on salmon. We were kept safe and alerted to bear activity by our guide, Olivia. We were in very close proximity to the bears, great photo opportunities but felt safe under Olivia’s guidance. Onboard the Single Star, Julia prepared delicious meals and snacks with fresh produce, meats and fish. I don’t believe anyone didn’t gain a pound or so on the adventure. Underway, we saw sea otters, puffins, whales, seals and several bald eagles. It was an adventure of a lifetime that I recommend to all my friends and family.

Horrible experience. Mike the captain was burned out and had very little interest with our trip/experience. Our bear guide was a nice young girl who knew less about bears than we did. Highly recommend using another tour operator.

Your response is far from the truth. The weather had nothing to do with my complaints. It is 100% due to your lack of communication and interest in your guests and their experience. I have been to Alaska multiple times and fully understand whether can go south at any point. I have been fortunate to have been to Africa, Alaska and many other wildlife viewing experiences in my life. The trip with you hands down was the worst experience I have ever had.

For anyone reading this when you book a trip 1.5 years ago, pay 10K per person, and 3 days into the trip your captain tells you a family reunion was just sprung on him. Then states he has to leave and will be flying in a new captain in the next morning. That in itself is totally F------ed up. The lack of communication and interest from Mike was so bad his staff apologized to our group multiple times over the trip. They were both embarrassed of his actions.

Mike you keep blaming the weather, it is time to speak to your staff and take responsibility for your own actions.

If you are planning on booking a trip with Mike my recommendation would be to use another tour operator.

I will be asking all others on our trip to also share their experience which I am confident will be similar to mine.

We had a wonderful trip with Adventure Kodiak. We found:

1. Mike to be a very personable and informed Katmai guide and ship captain.
2. Julia to be very friendly and an excellent chef and very brave Bear Guide.
3. Olivia to be very friendly and a very eager Bear Guide.
4. The Single Star and the skiff to be very nice boats that nicely did the job of getting us where we needed to go.
5. The room to be clean, neat, and with plenty of room for us to be very comfortable.
6. The Bears, Eagles, Sea Otters, Puffins, Black Oystercatchers, Foxes, Humpback Whales, Orcas, and numerous other birds to be very accomodating of our desires to capture digital images of them to bring home to share with our friends and family.

We highly recommend a trip (or three) with Adventure Kodiak!
