Whether you're local to San Diego or not - I can't recommend the Anthony (The Happy Captain) enough. I completed my ASA 104/114 with him as the Instructor. I've taken courses at several sailing schools (BVIs, Panama, Los Angeles) and I learned more in the 3 days spent with Anthony as the instructor than I did any other course.

Anthony's teaching style is empowering and allows you to teach other people to help you better understand "why" things are done. His passion for the sailing lifestyle is infectious and his 30+ years of on-the-water experience help him make more complicated subjects easy to understand to his students (e.g. for me it was Velocity Made Good).

Only warning is after a weekend with Anthony, you'll probably want to go buy that boat you've been dreaming about and set sail for the next year. 🙂

Met Anthony as an instructor through the ASA school in San Diego and will certainly be using his captain services in the future directly through his Happy Captain business. Anthony has been a true captain for a long time and has a personal style that excites you and invites you to want to crew the boat as if you're the captain. The first words he says are essentially, "I'm the captain and responsible for everything on the boat. You can't make a mistake and aren't making mistakes as a crew....you're learning. Let's enjoy it and learn something new!"

Anthony knows SoCal waters like the back of his hand and also knows places to dinghy to onshore and might even invite you to hang out with his nautical friends and peers after the trip. He knows the answer to most questions and will be the first to tell you the ones he doesn't know the answer to.

Call him! He's the real-deal, inspires confidence, believes truly in safety, and is chock-full of life stories--particularly San Diego. Ask him about his Rollerblading experiences at Mission Bay. 😉

Anthony was a fantastic instructor. I did my ASA 104/114 in San Diego and learned a ton from him in the three days we spent together. His lifetime of experience on the water and teaching style made the class fun and very beneficial. The skills and knowledge I gained from his instruction have increased my sailing and maneuvering under power confidence. If you have the option to go out on the water with Anthony, I highly recommend.

I chartered a beautiful boat in San Diego this week and we had the most amazing captain, Anthony the "Happy Captain". He is so much more than a positive and welcoming guy, he is one of the most proficient captains I've encountered. Big focus on safety and cleanliness and he really knows San Diego! He shared great stories and he showed us some amazing swim spots, took us dolphin/whale watching and gave us a great tour. His insight really enhanced my cruising experience. At one point he pulled a 74’ boat in sideways In the dark with no bow thrusters and parked it right between two big yachts. With his great skill, professionalism and client care I highly recommend The Happy Captain!

Some friends and I decided to charter a nice yacht for the day to celebrate a nice day and life in SD, and Captain Anthony was an AMAZING, perfectly accommodating, Captain and human being. Not only is he a fellow OG SD Pacific Beach Local (born & raised), he helps out kids and teaches sailing lessons and is an all around great guy. He is also certified up to 100 tons Master Instructor and I highly recommend hiring him to Captain any water vessel that you chose to enjoy or operate, for any amount of time.

We had THE BEST DAY EVER with The Happy Captain!!!!! He was punctual, knowledgeable, funny, friendly, organized, thoroughly prepared for just about anything, reasonably priced, great with kids, willing to be flexible to our needs, great communication and truly happy. We felt safe at all times with him at the helm. Anthony has superb sailing skills and we left with some of the most amazing memories from a day at sea with him.

The Happy Captain is a truly incredible captain, teacher, and person. Anthony was our ASA instructor for 5 days in San Diego/Catalina Island and was able to communicate and teach us all about sailing through his unmatched energy, experience, and passion. He took the time to work with each person in our group individually to ensure we understood the material in our own way.
