Always have loved Lake Chabot. It's just gotten so crowded on the weekends like every place else in California. Rented a pontoon it was nice but a little pricey. The fishing is always a struggle there so many people fishing all the time the fish just got too smart. They do stock it though.

Had a great experience hiking around the lake (9 miles). The trail was mostly shaded. Other than hiking, there are plenty of options and activities to explore like planned picnics, barbecue, biking, boat rentals. The parking inside the park is paid (5 bucks). There are restrooms. There is a cafe inside the park as well, just in case you need snack or coffee.

We have visited this park many times and it is our favorite place to hike in Castro Valley. We usually go on a weekday when it is not too busy and hike the lake perimeter trail counter-clockwise from the main entrance parking area off of Lake Chabot Rd. The dense forest along the trail makes for interesting flora & fauna explorations. Be careful of the poison oak!

The trail is paved for about 2 miles, making for easy walking with great views of the lake and surrounding hills. There are a few porta-potties along the way.

On a recent visit we did an interesting lollipop-loop hike on these trails starting from the park entrance: East Shore, Cameron Loop, Ten Hills, Indian Cove, and, finally, the East Shore Trail back to the park entrance.
