Excellent detour and stop for a quick history and engineering moment. Site is much improved since 2021 with viewing platform and signs. Parking is merely ok but adequate. You might even see a train circling the loop.

Great place to watch the trains. It is a spectacular location to view a train making a loop. I’ve visited several times and recently got to see it snowing up here with a train in the loop.

It is a pull off at the side of the road, but it is also a nice place to take pictures of the loop and surrounding area. I waited for a train and watching it go in was pretty cool.

Tehachapi Loop is a National Civil Engineering Landmark. It was built to assist freight trains negotiate the grade through Tehachapi pass. There is an overlook area along a well-maintained road, where you can somewhat see any one of the typically 35 trains that use the loop each day. However, finding drone footage as I have posted on my YouTube channel, is really the only way to appreciate the serpentine movements of the trains!

Gotta be a train thing to get 5☆ from me.
I had a picnic with my uncle and we had the pleasure of watching 2 different trains. It was free 5☆ entertainment.

Great destination! Given the 2% grade limit, the engineers had few choices to ascend the mountain from the Central Valley...and the terrain presented the loop as an option for an engineer that had the insight. Of course, modern high-speed passenger rail can tolerate much steeper grades (French trains up to 3.5% grades), providing more routing options, but the "loop" was a clever innovation when that flexibility was lacking. Don't miss it if you're in the neighborhood!

I stumbled upon this while out exploring during work travel, and what a breathtakingly beautiful place it is. The railroad, an unbelievable engineering feat, has been operating for over 100 years and averages THIRTY SIX trains per day passing through. Stop there any time and you will not wait more than 30 minutes, max to see one. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
