Summerfield Cabins - Ponca, Arkansas

We stayed in this cabin years ago and liked it well enough to choose to stay in it again. It is a nice comfortable place to stay and in the summertime the trees block the front porch from a large part of the road down front.
It is on Hwy 21 but traffic wasn’t bad for the time we spent there and is almost nonexistent at night or else you just can’t really hear it from inside. It also gets very nice and dark at night which makes for great star-gazing as well as sleeping. Beyond that we weren’t there for large chunks of the day so all of that to say don’t automatically write this cabin off just because it’s near a road.
The cabin was neat and clean and provided everything we needed for our stay. Checkin and check out were about the simplest and easiest you can get. The host was very attentive and responsive. We have stayed in another one of their properties in Ponca as well.
This is located on top of the hill before you drop down in to the Boxley Valley so all the hiking, boating, elk-sighting etc is easily and quickly accessible. We were able to see the elk, deer, what we think might have been wild pigs, groundhog (or something similar?) rabbits etc. mostly during a drive down in the cool of the early morning and/or at dusk.
There are a couple of stores in town that will get you by and a grocery store and restaurants in nearby Jasper.
Cell service is non-existent (at least for AT&T) but the cabin has wifi as does at least one of the local stores. So download your AllTrails or offline Google map before you head out for activities.
Don’t be too focused on just the hiking and water activity, pull up a map and take a drive on some of the dirt roads. There are some hidden beautiful spots with great vistas.

We enjoyed our weekend so much that we have already booked another weekend. Owner was super friendly and was quick to answer our questions. The cabin was larger than I expected, and so nice...definitely worth the price. It's close to the road, but the highway isn't super busy. We have recommended the property to several friends, and have thanked our friends for recommending it to us.

We enjoyed our stay until the very end when we got to see the owners true colors. We loaded our vehicle on check out day and headed into Ponca to grab breakfast with intentions to return to the cabin and eat breakfast with our family before heading home. On our return to the cabin we noticed we had been locked out! Mind you, check out is 11 and the current time is 9:30am. I called the owner with no answer. We decided to say our good-byes and hit the road. I called the owner on our way home and tried to explain our intentions and she did not have any kind of courtesy to apologize for locking us out, instead she came up with excuses that we had left and housekeeping came by thinking we were gone. I reminded her that check out was 11 and it was only 930, and housekeeping should not have been there until 11. I felt like we were being watched and don't see how someone would have known we had loaded up our items without snooping around the cabin.
