We had an amazing private tour with the reverend that we booked ahead. Learning about the civil rights movement from him was so much better than any museum or park ranger (no offense). The church was not in a great area of town but we felt safe and the surrounding area added to the experience of the visit. Really was a very memorable experience for us and one I’d recommend to anyone interested in the civil rights movement.

Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth was an amazing man. I had to share pics of his parsonage where he started the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights after the first parsonage was bombed and destroyed. The symbols/monuments of where the first house stood are eloquently simple yet so majestic in what they represent. The pic of the concrete pad is where the guards used to sit to watch over the Reverend and his family. If ever in Birmingham, Alabama, you should go visit.

The 2 hours we spent with Rev. Wilder were wonderful, well worth the cost. He answered our questions, tailored his presentation to our level of knowledge about the civil rights story in Birmingham, and shared with us his own part in the history of Bethel Baptist Church. Highly recommended!!!!

As a tourist visiting on a weekday, I found a lot more here than I thought I would. There are historical markers that go all the way around the block, telling the story of civil rights leader Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth and the THREE times he and the church were bombed and his incredible courage. Google maps took me to the "new church" corner of the block. The historic markers start at the "old church" on the opposite corner, so start the walk around the block from there. The steps to the parsonage are still there (the house was bombed, natch) and make a good platform for taking pics of the old building. It's amazing history!
