đ Reviews of Townsend State Forest

I lived in town for a while now but kept forgetting about checking this state forest out. Mainly because it's on a road, I don't normally drive down. We finally went over the weekend, and it was a nice hike. We brought our dog, who very much enjoyed the area as well. Lots of the paths were large enough where we weren't forced to walk single file like a lot of other walks we've done. I didn't notice much markers, but it also didn't seem confusing as to what's a pathway and what isn't.

Really enjoyed 7.4 miles of the 10 or so available.
Some hills but nothing too tough.
Mostly oak forests with some cut over areas
Most of the trails are in reasonably good shape, though some are covered with loose cobbles and a bit tough on safe footing.
Only reason this is not a 5 is that there are no trail markings.
It would be very easy to get turned around and head in the wrong direction.
Even the primary may that there are don't say"you are here" so you can pick a route or orient to the actual trails.
Get that fixed and you get a 5.
Maybe find a scout who needs to do an eagle scout project.

Townsend State Forest is a big state forest, and If you're looking for a peaceful walk in the woods you can't go wrong here. There are so many miles of trails that it's easy to get out into these woods, and not see another person. The trails are not very well marked so make sure you have a GPS, All Trails app, or a good old fashioned map, and compass to keep your bearings. The Forest is split into two large sections an eastern, and western. Main trail access for the eastern section can be found on Dudley Road while the main Access point for the western section is on Old Turnpike Road. Townsend State Forest has a few surprises for those who look for them. A small granite outcropping with a nice little view of West Townsend, an old Abandoned granite quarry, bogs, abandoned train tracks, old foundations from when the forest used to house a CC Camp, and signs of wildlife everywhere.

Lots of nice walking/hiking trails. We did 7+ miles without repeating anything but did have to walk on the road for a 1/4 mile.

Really neat plants to be found here! Many American chestnut trees of decent size (relatively speaking) and streams and marshy ponds in the forest.

Gorgeous forest with extensive trails and beautiful natural features

It's remote and very private. We're camping by the squanacook river. It's beautiful here.
