Rhonda and Mike warmly welcomed us on arrival to their comfortable and beautifully organized cottage - really more like a well-stocked house! Having a washer and dryer halfway through our 2 week birding adventure was a huge bonus. |It was easy to cook and enjoy meals indoors or on the shaded back patio, where we enjoyed a steady stream of “guests” at the generous variety of feeders there. Getting to know the regulars was a delight, including the Javelina “cleanup crew.”|We appreciated the quiet but not too-remote location, and the ease of driving to Portal and Rodeo as well as several other nearby feeder yards. The scenery and sunsets are also wonderful!

This is THE place to stay if you're in Portal for birding, with quick access to Cave Creek Canyon and all the local feeder sites. Additionally, there is an extensive set of feeders located behind the cottage witch are visited by a wide variety of local birds as well as javelinas. Very comfortable and shaded seating is provided there to watch the birds. The friendly and accommodating owners reside at the property and are easily accessible. The cottage was clean and well organized with the most extensive array of courtesy items I have ever experienced (even 4 flavors of salt for the popcorn). The beds were comfortable but very firm. This is a very isolated area so make sure you buy your groceries and supplies before arriving. Without question, we will stay here again when visiting Portal.

My birding friends and I stayed here for 3 nights in early May. Fantastic place!! Lots of amenities (Keurig with coffee and supplies, soap/shampoo, blowdryer, washer/dryer), comfy beds, kitchen, wood stove, and amazing wildlife on the back porch!! The owners were very nice but not intrusive. I would recommend Quailway Cottage to anyone who is looking for a quiet, clean place to enjoy nature.

Everything about this place is just absolutely amazing and I'm not even done with my stay! Everything is beautiful, hosts are friendly, animals are cute and abundant. Its pretty remote and you really get a sense of what an "unincorporated community" really feels like. Cell service is basically non-existent but wifi is available. If you like nature and don't mind a trip with an "off-grid" type of feel then this is the place for you.

There are a limited number of places to stay in the Chiricahua's and by the time we decided to go the choices were limited. So on the recommendation of another property owner we stayed at Quailway.||||First, the cottage is very nice. The rooms and beds were fine. The kitchen allowed us to save money on a couple of meals and we were able to wash some clothes in the laundry. There was detergent, but no dryer sheets (If you need those.) There is a water feature behind the cottage and bird feed for the feeders. We got the expected desert birds and a couple of migrating warblers. Nice. The cottage is only five miles from the Portal Store so even though were were out in the desert we were also only a few minutes from Cave Creek, etc. And the stars in the desert sky are wonderful.||||Second, the place looks abandoned. I'm not sure if the old owners are looking to sell or if the new owners haven't quite moved in yet. We heard rumors both ways. But the main house, the feeder station out near the highway, the gardens, and the tools in the yard all look like someone just walked away. None of that detracted from our experience though. In fact it was kind of nice having the place to ourselves.

This was our third time to the Portal area and a first for Quailway Cottage. It was the perfect location to have as a base camp to explore everything the area has to offer. The cottage was clean and quaint with everything we needed for our few day stay. The kitchen had all the basic cookware and utensils including spices and condiments in the refrigerator. The refrigerator has an ice-maker that was a plus. The only thing to keep in mind is that there is only a stove top not an oven so consider doing some grilling if you're making your own meals. We appreciated having a full laundry room to use. The property has a house as well but it is currently, unoccupied so we had the whole place to ourselves. It was very peaceful and had wildlife all around. The manager, Craig, had supplied the bird feeders before we arrived and he was also great to chat with about the area. Javelina, mule deer, jackrabbits and cottontail were daily visitors along with numerous bird species. Also, before we arrived the manager told us about a bobcat he saw on the property. We observed the bobcat as soon as we arrived. It ended up being a female with three kittens! We watched her every day as she would stalk and hunt rabbit then bring her kittens out from under a shed to play and nurse. It was a highlight of the trip for sure. Coyote also made an appearance one morning while the javelina were coming through. We were also fortunate enough to see a young black bear in the canyon on one of our daily drives. Can't forget the reptiles and invertebrates as we also saw several snake species, tarantulas and vinegaroons. Wildlife abounds around this lovely cottage! Although the area is usually known for birding we enjoyed it all. We had a great time...thanks Craig! We look forward to coming back.

Quailway cottage is a great place to stay in the Portal/Rodeo/Cave Creek Canyon area. It is clean, comfortable and has everything you need to enjoy a short or long stay including a nice sized bathroom, washer/dryer and full kitchen with microwave. We spent two nights at the cottage recently, but unfortunately our staying coincided with the storm of the year. We had high winds, rain and it snowed in Portal and the canyon. The weather forced us to spend a lot of our time at the cottage itself instead of exploring the area. However, this didn't turn out to be so bad. Kristine and Larry have set up a desert garden behind the cottage that attracts all sorts of wildlife. We had dozens of birds at the feeders constantly even in the rain. The gambel's quail and woodpeckers were our favorites. But, the garden also attracts jackrabbits, cotton tail rabbits, Javelina (peccaries), coyotes, and apparently a bobcat. We saw coyotes a lot but missed seeing the javelinas and bobcat despite all our efforts (and all the rabbits that we thought would attract the bobcat).||||The weather did clear enough to spend one afternoon in cave creek canyon and it is spectacular. There are lots of hiking opportunities in the canyon and of course wildlife to spot if you are quiet. We didn't get very far on the south fork trail because it was washed out by a flowing waterfall and stream caused by the recent rains, but we got a good enough taste of the area to know that we need to come back. If you are in to wildlife, stop by the Cave Creek Ranch which is just outside the canyon. They have set up feeders that attract lots of birds and while we were there; coati. We had a great time watching the family of coati pillage the feeders and just have a good old time. It was well worth the $5 visitor fee that the ranch asks for. I can't imagine how much food the ranch goes through on a daily basis since every feeder that didn't have a coati on it had other birds. There was even a nice blue-throated hummingbird hanging around for the winter. But, alas we weren't able to find the Elegant Trogon that sometimes hangs out in the canyon area.||||All of the attached photos were taken from the patio of the cottage so you can see a sample of the birds and mammals that frequent the area. In the summer time, add lizards and snakes to that list I am sure. ||||There are other places to stay in the area but when we go back, we won't hesitate to stay at the Quailway Cottage. It is quiet, peaceful and the perfect getaway for nature lovers and wildlife watchers.

I can't believe this great cottage hasn't received any additional reviews since my original one 18 months ago. Take my word for it, the guest book at the cottage is filled with wonderful comments. Anyway, this was our 2nd stay and as the title suggests, it was a great stay. The new managers are making improvement including wifi access and new bird feeders and bird watching areas. We spend early mornings and late afternoons at the cottage and saw tons of wildlife including daily Javenlinas, cottontails, lizards, and of course birds. This is a great cottage for wildlife lovers and it is really close to Portal. As an added bonus, the new manager is a professional bird watching guide and we spent a great morning with him during our stay. All of the attached pictures were taken on the grounds of the cottage so you can see for yourself how great the wildlife is. If you are staying near Portal and like nature, quiet and amazing stars don't hesitate to book at stay at the Quailway Cottage.
