Beautiful area with lots of walking/hiking/biking trails. Large lake for fishing, canoes, kayaks, small boat ramp, concession available in season. The campground is very nice. Sites are electric only, but there is water available throughout the park and a dump station near the exit. Lots of ducks on the lake and turkeys walking around the park. Some trails walk along the water.

Illinois' largest state park, about an hour and a half drive from Chicago, is definitely worth a trip out. There's a good sized lake with a boat ramp and fishing and and tons of trails for horseback riding, hiking or mountain biking. We came in the fall and the colors were beautiful. Close enough to Wisconsin to get some New Glarus afterwards!

I absolutely love camping here! Very scenic and peaceful! They have a small camp store and a big concessions stand if you need anything. Staff are very friendly and nice! However, the shower building Is NOT well kept! Found bugs all over the shower while I was in there, there's weird substances on the shower walls, there's spider webs EVERYWHERE, and the shower curtains are so old that the medal rings holding them up are rusting! Also the water smells like rotten fish! I love staying here but would maybe find a different place to shower.

Been hiking here over 20 years. It can definitely get busy on weekends, holidays or if they are doing a running event. Mosquitos and ticks are horrible! If you have dogs be sure to check them before getting in your car. I do recommend some kind of bug repellant when hiking in the later spring and summer. Trails can be messy especially after rain or in the winter and bikes are ripping up the trails. Be very aware if you are hiking with kids or dogs because some of the bikers come flying down hills or around corners and I have had to push my kids off trail or dive off trail myself more times than I care to count. Most of the bikers are know these trails are shared with others but some must not realize it.

As you do walk around be on the lookout for painted rocks. We have enjoyed finding and moving around and even painted some of our own and placed out for others to find and enjoy 🙂

Toilets are horrible. Always. Disgusting after any event and usually not even usable.

This is a very huge state park. There’s a lot of different things to do. There’s many different nature trails that lead to many different areas of this park. There is a lot of picnic areas and yes, there is a designated picnic area but there’s also picnic areas picnic tables that are on different trails and pass and some of them are designated right off of the water. They have a concession area and a café Has not been opened yet as far as I’ve been there, but once it is open, I will comment and leave a review on the café concession part. They have rentals for canoeing, but the couple times that I’ve been there they were not letting people rent because of the wins and the temperature outside in the water, which tells me that they are concerned for the customer safety, and the safety comes first before their pockets, which I admire, and I respect Safety first right for the public. They have a playground and I always see Minnie dogs being walked with their owners. It’s a very friendly family orientated place. I’ve never seen anybody have any altercations or any type of negativity at all. I would highly recommend this place to individuals and families, but I do see many signs that say do not get locked in. They have different closing times I would just keep an eye on that. Make sure that you don’t get locked into the park after hours.
