Late last September, I came through Gunnison, as I had the previous two Septembers, to spend time taking in the spectacular wildlife and vistas on the north rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. I stopped by the visitor center for trail maps and general information. Even though I'd confused the locations of Pioneer Point and Morrow Point due to some general bear warning signs that had been posted at PP the prior year, the volunteer was both patient and diplomatic in clarifying the names and areas of the North Rim route. A couple days later on my way north I came back for route information and we had a short conversation on the effects of development on wilderness areas. At that point, she recommended an alternative route north over Cottonwood Pass that would not only take me off the beaten path, but had a historical component in taking me over one of the few remaining gravel road passes in Colorado, scheduled for closure and paving in the summer of 2017. The evening drive up and over that pass was spectacular, as were the sunset and crystal clear night skies I encountered at the summit. These folks have a clear love for their work and a passion for the wild places where they dwell and play. They deserve our implicit trust and support. Thank you for the great service you provide!
