5* for nature & serenity, 3* for isolation & lack of amenities. A little visited spot just off Hwy 1 with beautiful wetlands and isolated endless beach running north to the mouth of the Salinas River. No toilets, water or trash cans. Parking reached via dirt road (1 km) that can be impassable after heavy rain (offering the option of adding a muddy extra km to your hike). Sign says open sunrise to sunset.

Fowl hunting area on right. Left trail goes to beach. Trail is flat, dirt/rock, then turns to sand before hitting beach. Dunes are beautiful, but small. Pond is nice but few birds, definitely need binoculars. Beach extend s forever.
Nice place to take stroll but not too much wildlife to look at, up close anyways.
Beautiful and serene place to lose in your thoughts.

Access to the refuge is through farm fields. Be prepared for a very rough rutted road after a rain. Disappointed that you could not fish the refuges river front. Only fishing is surf fishing

Combining the river loop and beach trail creates about a two mile walk. The parking area was difficult to access due to muddy conditions. The beach area is quiet and pretty. I bet this area would be more fun with a guide to point out the bird species.

Good place to bird watch. Trail to the right leads to water fowl hunting area and the river loop, to the left it goes past salt marshes to the beach. I saw people fishing for perch and stripers. Its a nice place to relax, see birds and the occasional seal.

Beautiful place with sand Dunes, a pond, and beach access. You have to access the dirt lot through active farmland.
